Haggis & Whisky Tasting
Haggis & Whisky supper
– 19th Jan 2008
– Old Lodge Hotel
The Old Lodge didn’t know what hit
them.
7.00 pm found the Solent MOA clan gathering in the bar. With talk of Haggis,
whisky, an ode and a piper followed by a whisky tasting expectancy was
high.
The Laird of the
Solent
branch, Richard Beeson appeared in full dress, along with Hamish the pet
Haggis. The guests were some 45 strong, some kilted other sporting a
tartan bow others preferring wisely, anonymity.
Peter Williams opened proceedings
with The Selkirk Grace and then we sat at 7.45 to Cock-a-leekie-soup,
(only served on land to MOA boat owners!), to be followed by the first
of our evenings highlights- the entrance of the Haggis

following which
there was the ‘performance’ of the Ode, - The Laird reciting in broad ?
Scots? The
famous ode with an able translation by Steve –the ever
present Brit toff.
The Ode
done, there was the ’reply’ (poem by JG Farrell) delivered by none other
than Annemarie, also attired in full dress.
The toast done we sat
to enjoy the Haggis, tatties, and neeps, appropriately washed down with
whisky.
Whilst
we awaited the sweet, Peter recited My Supper with Rabbie by Scott
Welch.
Whilst the sweet was eaten and coffee
served the Piper Campbell de Burgh, provided some of the old Scottish
favourites.

The meal finished with Auld Lang Syne, after an impromptu
rehearsal of the melody between The Laird who ‘sang’ and the Piper who
followed!
We were then piped into the bar where
the landlord introduced us to the subtleties of malt whisky.
The evening finished with a
presentation of some fine Orcadian malt to the piper at around
11.00 pm.
It was an enjoyable evening, a lot of
fun and a remarkable turnout for a January winter’s evening, thanks to
all for making a good event.
